The President of Tanzania Samia Suluhu Hassan disclosed why she decided to delay announcing the sudden passing of President John Pombe Magufuli.
Speaking on March 22nd March 2021 when the country was holding the State funeral mass of their late President John Pombe Joseph Magufuli, the newly sworn-in President opened up about her reason for delaying the announcement of the death of Magufuli that was tasked to her by the adherence of government protocol.
Madam President Samia Suluhu said that she had two difficult days in her political career since she joined politics.
One of those days was when she was tasked to announced Magufuli’s death and the other one being yesterday during his funeral mass.
In her speech, Mama Samia admitted that it was not easy for her to announce the death of Magufuli because she was hesitant.
She confessed that she wasn’t willing to immediately announced the death of President Magufuli adding that she was feeling that it was a mistake to announce this to the nation.
She had to ultimately announce the death of the head of state and break the sad news because according to Tanzania’s constitution only allowed her, the Vice-President, and nobody else to announce the sad news.
“Ilikuwa siku ngumu tarehe kumi na saba nilipotakiwa kutangaza kifo cha Rais. Haikuwa rahisi kwangu. Nilihisi nafanya makosa kutangaza yakuwa Rais wangu amefariki, lakini nikaambiwa hakuna wa kutangaza hili isipokuwa wewe. Kwa hivyo nilijipa moyo na nikafanya hivyo,” Samia Suluhu said.
Samia said that the late President John Pombe Joseph Magufuli was loved and respected by all and this was seen and proven by the huge number of people who turned out to see him.
Estimately, the people who came out to see his body at his State funeral at Dodoma were over 20,000.
Madam President went on to admit that yesterday, she had the toughest day of seeing the body of Magufuli lying there before her and her standing in the place where he was supposed to be standing as the head of State addressing the nation.
The funeral service at Dodoma was attended by a lot of people with celebrities from Tanzania showing up, all of them and some of them even performing some of the songs they wrote for him. Harmonize was spotted crying like a baby.
The funeral was attended by 17 heads of State from Africa including President Uhuru Kenyatta, President Cyril Ramaphosa in the event that was held at Dodoma.
