The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Wednesday appointed Justice William Ouko as the supreme court judge following vigorous interviews amongst various interested parties.
Prior to his appointment, justice William Ouko was serving as the President of the court of appeal. Besides, he applied to be the chief justice of Kenya which saw Martha Koome emerge victorious.
“After deliberations this afternoon and careful consideration of the performance of the various candidates who we interviewed for the position of Judge of the Supreme Court, the Commission has today recommended for appointment Hon. Mr. Justice Ouko William Okello, CBS. EBS, President of the Court of Appeal as Judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya and has submitted his name to His Excellency the President for appointment,” added Prof. Mugenda.
While confirming his appointment, Professor Olive Mugenda affirmed that the process was fair, open, transparent and competitive.
“…the process has been engaging and rewarding to all the Commissioners who had the opportunity to interact with some of the best legal minds in Kenya in an open process that has revealed the rich legal resource that this country possesses,” said Prof. Mugenda.

Having been nominated as the supreme court replacing retired justice Ojwang’, William Ouko will walk away with a huge salary matching the status of his office.
As stipulated, the lowest basic salary any supreme court judge takes home is 475,200 while the lowest allowance is 316, 800. However, the lowest starting monthly salary for such a judge is 792,000 while highest basic salary is 731,121 with the highest allowance capped at 487,414 Kenya shillings.
Also, the gross highest remuneration a supreme court judge like Ouko can take home every month is 1,218,535 Kenya shillings.
