The man who intentionally slapped French President Emmanuel Macron has been sent to jail where he will be locked for four months.
The 28 year old Damien Tarel was sentenced for 18 months but 14 of those were suspended according to Reuters.
The New York Post reported that earlier, Tarel told the court in Valence that he was a right-wing sympathizer and had considered pelting Macron with an egg or a cream tart, according to BFM TV.
“I think that Macron represents very neatly the decay of our country. If I had challenged Macron to a duel at sunrise, I doubt he would have responded.” Tarel told the court.
“Absolutely unacceptable” and “an act of deliberate violence.” Said the prosecutor as he requested for 18 month jail.
French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday received a slap of his lifetime from a villager leaving the crowd cheering.
President Emmanuel Macron was slapped on the left cheek by a man in the crowd as he prepared to address them after paying a visit to southeast France on Tuesday.
In a video footage widely shared online, Macron ran in excitement towards the crowd to a metal fence and clasping the arm of a man as he greeted the curious onlookers. However, Macron’s excitement was immediately put to an end by the man who slapped him while yelling “Macronie.”
“A man indeed tried to hit the President of the Republic. We have no further comments at this point. Exchanges with the crowd and handshakes resumed. The trip continues.” Said the Elysee in a statement to CNN.
