Kisumu County is experiencing almost a similar situation as India with hospitals becoming overwhelmed by the surging cases of Covid-19.
Kisumu, a county which in the past had managed the Covid-19 situation very well has turned into a new epicenter.
This week alone, Kisumu recorded the highest infections, overtaking Nairobi and Mombasa.
Chief executive Dr. George Rae of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital stated the hospital is now experiencing a shortage of space to admit more patients and a lack of oxygen to cater for those with extreme Covid-19 infections.
On Thursday, the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital had 20 admitted patients with Covid-19.
“We have a 100-bed isolation center just near Kondele police station, but due to the ongoing construction here (the main hospital), we have been forced to move some of the patients there,” he said.
Due to the worrying situation in Kisumu, Siaya county agreed to receive one referral case on Wednesday this week.
Neighboring counties have also experienced the surge. In Kisii County, there are 26 patients in the Covid-19 isolation ward at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital. Residents fear that the just concluded Bonchari by-election may act as a super spreader.
County Public Health director Dr Richard Onkware said the India strain, which has been reported in the neighboring Kisumu remains a concern.
Siaya County recorded 27 new cases of Covid-19, raising the tally to 1, 078 out of 14, 027 samples tested as of May 18.
In Migori, 10 remandees from Kehancha GK prison tested Covid-19 positive on Wednesday. They are currently isolated at Migori GK prison.
The county has so far recorded 1,338 positive cases and 21 mortalities.
“We have not recorded a case of the variants reported in Kisumu and neighboring Tanzania,” county Health executive Kephas Nyamita said. He noted that cross-border coordination with Tanzanian officials had been enhanced.
Other counties surrounding Kisumu are on high alert to avoid the spilling over of the Covid-19 cases.
This comes as the country continues to experience an acute shortage of Covid-19 vaccines. A shipment from DRC is expected in the country to help push the vaccination drive.
