Aggrieved England fans after the game took on Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka by telling him to go back to Nigeria after he lost the last penalty in the Euro 2021 finals pitting England and Italy.
As one of the penalty takers, Bukayo Saka and Rashford of Manchester United were brought from the bench to take the penalty.
However, Italy’s tall goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma dived to save Saka’s penalty which saw them get crowned as the European Champions.
In the meantime, some football specialists have blamed the manager for putting too much pressure on the 19 year old Bukayo Saka by making him take the penalty in such a crucial match.
According to Daily Mail , the Arsenal star was targeted with racist language and emojis on the social media website, on his most recent post from the day before the final. One user told him ‘get out of my country’, while another said: ‘Go back to Nigeria’.
The FA said it was ‘appalled’ by the abuse and would do everything possible to support players affected by racism.
‘We could not be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behaviour is not welcome in following the team,’ said the FA in a statement.
‘We will do all we can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible.
‘We will continue to do everything we can to stamp discrimination out of the game, but we implore government to act quickly and bring in the appropriate legislation so this abuse has real life consequences.
‘Social media companies need to step up and take accountability and action to ban abusers from their platforms, gather evidence that can lead to prosecution and support making their platforms free from this type of abhorrent abuse.’
The two teams drew and then proceeded to the penalty where everything ended 3-2 in favor of Italy. Rashford and Bukayo Saka were also very disappointed having missed the penalties.
