More than 800 people received fake Covid-19 vaccinations, police have established unsuspecting patients were injected with water.
A doctor who is on the run duped several people and companies and injected them with fake vaccines between May 15th and June 17th.
Dr. Warren Naamara, the director of State House Health Monitoring Unit, told the press that the number of people vaccinated with water in Kampala Metropolitan area was much more as police are trying to establish the exact number.
Two nurses who worked at a clinic in Kampala are also being remanded at Kitalya Prison for vaccinating people using water.
Naamara also said a number of suspected fake Covid-19 vaccine vials with the genuine ones were sent to the Directorate of Government Analytical Laboratory and National Drug Authority (NDA) for analysis.
The NDA forwarded the suspected fake Covid-19 sample to Serum Institute of India manufacturers of Vaccines & immuno-biologicals for comparison with genuine vaccines.
The Serum Institute of India confirmed that the product label details were falsified. Government Analytical Laboratory also confirmed that the seized vaccines were not similar to the genuine vials.
“The fake vaccines were more of water than anything else from the chemical contents as it was analysed,” Dr Naamara said.
Naamara nonetheless reassured people who received the fake jabs that they are not poisoned and in danger.
The fake Covid-19 jab further derails the government fight against the virus. Uganda went on a two-month strict lockdown in June as Covid-19 infections spiraled out of control.
Ugandan government also approved the use of a locally manufactured Covid-19 vaccine Covidex, a drug prepared from herbs.
Covidex manufacturer stressed that the drug does not cure Coronavirus but only supplements the treatment given to a Covid-19 patients.
The drug was made by scientists from Mbarara university led by professor Patrick Ogwang. The effectiveness of Covid-19 treatment by the drug sparked a lot of debate.
