One case in point this week is VSS a security company that employs close to 2000 South Sudanese . The company is involved in providing security services to local as well as international organizations.

Apparently, one Deputy Mayor of Juba Thiik Thiik Mayardit who also doubles as a relative of the President Salva Kiir takes it upon himself to dictate to the company what wages and conditions should be applied to workers. Besides, he threatens and indeed carries out violence on expatriate foreign management of the company.

For instance, this week alone he orchestrated an attack on the HQ of VSS in which 2 English managers were beaten severely. The thugs that came and beat them were numbering in excess of 20 . They beat up 2 helpless foreigners whose only mistake was to work in the country.

The melee began after they simply broke into the premises, ransacked the offices , beat the staff and all in the name of Thiik Thiik Mayardit!

The company also has a letter from Thiik Thiik Mayardit proving his involvement in Labour issues that he has no authority over since the Ministry of Labour are the lawful enforcers of workers rights which the company has always involved.

The source of this information added: “One must ask as the 10 years of secession approach how Juba can get out of its dilapidated state. With a Deputy Mayor calling the shots when it comes to foreign investors, where will the country grow ? This is not the first time the Deputy Mayor has caused problems with foreign companies and traders.”

“He continually threatens traders from neighboring countries too. It is high time the higher authorities put an end to this lawless character . He endangers employment for thousands of people . It is also time for foreign companies to sue him . His use of “ I am protected by the President is an abuse of the President himself as the President surely does not condone his behavior.” Concluded the source.
