Abdulkadir Mohamed, the son to the late Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji has been declared the next senator for Garissa county unopposed, replacing his father who passed on recently.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati on 6th April 2021 announced through a Gazette Notice that there was no competition since only one candidate was in the race.
“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by Articles 88 (4) and 98 (1) (a) of the Constitution of Kenya, section 4 of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act, 2011, sections 13(3), 16, and of the Elections Act, 2011, Part III, VI to IX and Regulations 51, (2), (4) and (5) and 53 of the Elections (General) Regulations, 2012, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission makes a declaration of no contest and DECLARES the person listed in the 1st and 2nd Column to the Schedule DULY ELECTED as the Senator, Garissa County,” read the notice.
The Jubilee Party had settled on Abdulkadir Mohamed to fly the party ticket in the vacant Garissa senatorial seat following the death of his father Yusuf Haji.
In the meantime, Abdulkadir Mohamed had been endorsed by the Garissa county professionals and elders as a show of respect and honor to the late father.
Garissa Senator Mohamed Yusuf Haji died at Aga Khan Hospital where he had been ill for a while at the age of 80.
The late Haji who was the father to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji had been flown in from Turkey where he had been since December for treatment.
Before his death, he served as a District Commissioner and Provincial Commissioner for long in the old Constitution.
He also served as Cabinet Minister of Defense from 2008 to 2013 under the Grand Coalition Government of Retired President Mwai Kibaki and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and briefly as Minister of Internal Security and Provincial Affairs in 2012.
